I was introduced to Equine Assisted Learning approximately 15 years ago when my children were quite young and experienced the loss of their father. Being a teenager is difficult enough without added trauma. I attended some EAGALA (Equine Growth and Learning Association) training in 2016 to obtain my Equine Specialist certification. The model they use is a psychotherapy partnership between a mental health professional and an equine specialist.
My vision with Equinity Stables is simpler than the EAGALA model and I hope to provide a therapeutic environment for people to grow and learn about themselves as well as a safe place to heal.
I have faced many personal challenges in my life including the loss of my father at the age of 12, life on the streets of Toronto, the loss of my short term memory for 6 months after a crash in a race car. Learning to walk again through 6 years of physical therapy only to have an automobile crash and end up in a wheelchair for 2 years until back surgery and cancer. I use the experiences in my life to help others move forward in theirs.
Matthew is a multi level member of our farm family. When you are here you will see his work on the barn and outbuildings as he has been responsible for the conversion from a steel building to a board and batten exterior as well as the new horse shed that was added in 2016.
Matthew owns his own painting business but always makes time to help out when necessary.
Matthew has a special skill working with at risk youth and mentoring.
As a cancer survivor myself Equinity Stables is my vision. I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in October of 2015. After surgery and chemotherapy and a few months of recovery, I tried to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. After suffering a car accident the year before and back surgery 6 months prior to my cancer diagnonsis,
Selena is the backbone of Equinity Stables operations. She brings 25 years of horse experience to the table. She loves all animals and of course her favourite lamb Stuart. Selena works in our Riding Lesson and Youth programming.
She can be seen on daily basis making sure that all the animals are fed and watered.
I was no longer the person I used to be. I have owned approximately 250 horses over the past 30 years and have extensive experience with herd dynamics. I have chosen to find a way to give to others through the help of Equine Assisted Growth and Learning programs at my farm.
